This project continues the effort we planed in the previous proposal approved in 2015. The major aim has been to develop an international research center on mathematical biology, building up from the research team at Guangzhou University as a core, partnering with Guangzhou Center for Disease Prevention and Control, and Michigan State University in the United States. The center will operate as a research platform to serve the colleagues and students in China, emphasizing in particular the South China. The research topics will be focused on systems biology, stochastic gene expression, and prevention and control of dangerous diseases such as dengue fever, malaria, and Zika. We will integrate and optimize the resources in the universities and research institutions in Guangdong and neighboring provinces, to promote innovative ideas and knowledge exchange, to work jointly on the problems in the emergent need of medical science and for the advancement of mathematical theory. Because of our promising progress in dengue control, the applicant was invited by the organizing committee in the IAEA meeting for monitoring dengue virus in Southeast Asia to deliver a plenary talk. In the forthcoming years, we will continue to uphold our main idea of "freedom, integration and social services", to attract more talented researchers in mathematics, computer sciences, biology, and medical sciences, to carry out a series of academic activities. We will also extend our interdisciplinary studies to cooperate with medical institutions or hospitals on microbiology, chronic respiratory disease and HIV. The platform is expected to help make major scientific and technological achievements, encourage the growth of young talents, and advance the creativity, originality, and independent innovation of Chinese sciences in mathematics, biology and medical sciences.
