The controlled crystallization of calcium carbonate with water soluble polymers and polymer latices was investigated in this project. By carrying out this project, 3 SCI papers were published or accepted for publication. A series of results were obtained. 1. Through the study of the influence of copolymer latex P(St-co-MAA) on CaCO3 crystallization, it was found that meta-stable vaterite tends to dominate and exist in the final product with the increase of carboxyl group in polymer latex; vaterite content in final product increases with the increase of saponification ratio of carboxyl group on polymer latex. 2. The addition of water soluble PVP and surfactants such as SDS, AS and SDBS into reaction system induced the formation of hollow and flower-shaped CaCO3 crystals. 3. Modified chitosan and protein extracted from abalone shell also affects the crystallization habit of CaCO3. All these results provide scientific basis for the further investigation of biomimic mineralization process and for the understanding of interactions between organic and inorganic components in organisms.
