Thymic neuroendocrine cells were a group of special diffused secreting cells (APUD cells) in snake thymus( Li and Wang, Science in China(B),1994), under the support of Chinese Nature Science Fundation we have studied the charachteristics of this group of cell from ontogeny to phylogeny with immunocytochemical, in situ hybridization, microstructural and ultrastructural methods. The results show as follows: as a group of diffused cell with different types, the thymic neuroendocrine cells are as same as the neuroendocrine cells in gut and respiratory tract in cellular structure and the synthesizing and secreting hormones. The cells located as closed and open types secret their hormones by the way as paracrine and autocrine and regulate the function of thymic microenvironment and tdevelopment of T cells. The thymic neuroendocrine cells appear at the late stage of thymic development in snake and maybe have the same stem cell with thymic epithelial cells. From the experiment of the relationship of sex hormone with these cells, it also show that these cells can regulate other targets as endocrine cells. These results confirmed that thymus is a neuroendocrine cells in non-mammal vertebrates and play a key path between neuroendocrine and immune systems.. On the other side, the degeneration of thymus is a important and unclear point in aging. We did the rejuvenation of degenerative thymus in vivo and in vitro. The experiment show it is a possible to rejuvenate the degenerating thymus.
