In response to the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese contracting firms actively undertake overseas engineering projects and are encouraged to implement cross-broader supply chain integration to support project delivery. However, prior studies mainly focus on domestic supply chain integration and have widely discussed how supply chain integration influence firm performance. It still lacks understanding on the relationship between cross-broader supply chain integration and project performance. Particularly, governance mechanisms should be explored to ensure the effectiveness of cross-broader supply chain integration. Therefore, this project will conduct systematic studies on cross-broader project-based supply chain integration. By applying a multi-case study method, this project intends to firstly identify the dimensions of cross-broader supply chain integration from the scope and element based perspective and investigate the dynamic relationships among these integration dimensions within the project life cycle. The case study results will reveal the nature of cross-broader project based supply chain integration. Then, this project aims at exploring the mechanisms and paths between cross-broader supply chain integration and project performance. Specifically, this project will investigate how cross-broader supply chain integration influences project performance through agility management and knowledge management and further validate the moderating effects of project type, project characteristics, institutional and cultural factors. Moreover, considering the potential risks related to overseas projects, this study will further explore how different governance mechanisms including contract governance, relational governance, and institutional norms moderate the relationship between cross-broader supply chain integration and project performance. Based on a questionnaire survey method and statistical analysis, the results will provide empirical evidences for the performance effect and governance mechanisms of cross-broader project based supply chain integration. This project will extend the existing research on supply chain integration and provide insights on how to implement project-based supply chain integration in the overseas context.
