The synthesis method of carbon nanotube arrays was further developed. We revealed the growth mechanism of multi-walled carbon nanotube arrays in CVD (Chemical Vapor Depositon) by a 13C isotope-labeling technique. Arrays of monodispersed carbon nanotubes were fabricated by using AAO (Anodic Aluminum Oxide) template, the shape and the diameter of the nanotubes in the array can be controlled and adjusted by varying the anodizing conditions of the template. The field emission properties of intrinsic and doped single nanotube were studied, the monodispersed nanotube arrays also exhibit excellent field emission properties. We also grow semiconductor nanowire array by similar techniques as growing carbon nanotube arrays. We made super-aligned carbon nanotube arrays by improved CVD method and successfully pulled out continuous nanotube yarns out of such arrays. The creation of such yarns would enable macroscopic applications for carbon nanotubes.
