Gum rosin and turpentine oil are two important forest products in China. They are cheap, natural and renewable. However, most of them just being used as raw materials. In this study, a series of turpentine oil-based polyurethane baking varnishes, rosin-based epoxy resins and interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) materials, based on rosin-based epoxy resin and turpentine oil-based polyurethane, were prepared from gum rosin and turpentine oil. The FTIR spectra showed that the cure rate of the turpentine oil-based polyurethane was faster than that of rosin-based epoxy resin and these two networks formed more sequentially than simultaneously in the final IPNs. The results of DSC showed that each of the IPNs exhibited a single glass transition (Tg), and when the rosin-based epoxy resin was 13%, the Tg reached the top value. SEM observations further confirmed that there was no phase separation in the final IPNs. TG analysis showed that the thermal stability of the IPNs was better than that of the rosin-based epoxy resin component . The results of performance testing also showed that when the rosin-based epoxy resin was 13%, the IPN exhibited good mechanical properties. All these results could be helpful for using gum rosin and turpentine oil to improve other materials properties efficiently.
