regulation of hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and sympathetic nervous system (SNS) on thermogenesis of brown adipose tissue (BAT) was investigated in Brandt's voles (Microtus brandti), Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) and hibernate Daurian ground squirrel (Spermophilus dauricus ) exposed to cold or short photoperiod. The results indicated that thermogenesis induced both by cold and by short photoperiod was regulated mainly by SNS. Although hormones both in HPT axis and HPA axis were involved in the regulation, the patterns and extent of their functions did in a different way in every species. The characteristics of BAT thermogenesis in small mammals and the differences of its regulatory mechanism were correlated with animals' preferred inhabitancies. Besides these, It is possible that other complicated factors participate in thermigenetic regulation of BAT in mammals induced by cold or short photoperiod. HPT aixs was activated in Daurian ground squirrel during hibernation and it was helpful to increase thermogenesis during arousal, but HPA axis was inhibited during hibernation and the inhibition of this axis to BAT thermogenesis was released.
