Mesolytic cleavage, i.e., the facilitated bond cleavage in radical cations and radical anions, was used as a strategy to develop new methods applicable to organic synthesis. This methodology can prevent the back electron transfer in photoinduced electron transfer reactions, hence significantly promote such reactions. New reactions found in this program include: (a) photoinduced regioselective free radical addition to aromatic imines;(b)photoinduced Dielse-Alder reactions of aromatic imines for synthesis of tetrahydroquinoline derivatives;(c)Photoinduced radical cation mediated selective ring opening reaction of epoxides;(d)Formation of novel macrocyclic crown ethers by photoinduced reaction of diazonaphthaquinones;(e)photoinduced selective desilylation of silyl ethers.
