Base on the supramolecular chemistry and molecular engineering the self-assembled monolayers(SAMs) of derivative compound of Schiff base tailored with -SH group and its composite monolayers, which were firstly formed on Au substrate, were characterized and investigated using cyclic voltammetry(CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) techniques. All the results confirmed their formation. Comparing with the SAMs of alkanethiol, the SAMs of Schiff base were relatively loose. An electrochemical irreversible reduction/oxidation process of the schiff base molecule in 0.1 mol·L-1 KCl solution was found. Electrochemical study shows that the apparent electron-transfer rate conctant decreases with the increasing of assembled time. The apparent thickness of the composite monolayers, which was calculated to be about 10 CH2 basing on the previous formula, suggesting that Schiff base in the composite monolayers was displayed in a linear way. The complexation of Cu2+ and Ca2+ with the Schiff base also detected using EIS method. The results established important base for indepthly investigation the mechanism of electron-tasfer in SAMs of Schiff base, mechanism of compiexation with metal ion and activity of Schiff base in organism.Otherwise, we have synthesized two Schiff bases with different alkyl chains length and investigated their monolayer behavior and LB film characteristics by UV-vis absorption spectra, fluorescence spectra and infrared spectra. The results indicate that two compounds form J-aggregate in LB films, and the Schiff base with the longer alkyl chains is more orderly in LB film and have photoluminescnece properties..
