A process of gold leaching with reaction products from elemental sulfur in alkaline solutions under oxygen pressures was proposed and investigated. The reaction chemistry, formation mechanism and conditions of the reagent complexed with gold ions in the process were studded through tests. A series of experiments. The effect of the initial molar ratio of S0 and OH-, the final pH in leachates, the consumption of oxygen, the reaction temperature, the leaching time and the other factors on the kinetics of gold leaching in the process were confirmed thorough a series of experiments. Based on the results of fundamental studies, a technology for gold leaching with elemental sulfur in alkaline solutions under oxygen pressure was proposed. The optimized operation conditions for the technology were found out from experimental results of a gold sulfide concentrate and a residue from an arsenic refractory gold concentrate by pre-treating with a low concentrate HNO3 solution under oxygen pressures. It is shown that the leached gold was similar, and the leaching time was obviously shorted for the technology in comparing with cyanidation. The results from the residue leaching with this technology show some excellences over the cyanide leaching, for example, more higher leached yield and non needed to add a complexed reagent for gold extraction.
