细胞色素c通过两条呼吸链电子漏旁路清除线粒体中的O2-. 和H2O2,这一发现肯定了细胞色素c抗氧毒性的新功能。实际上细胞色素c在不同的部位行使不同的功能:当它传递电子时它是与呼吸链酶紧密结合的(Cyt.C+3与复合物III结合接受电子,Cyt.C+2与复合物IV结合给出电子);而当它行使启动细胞凋亡的功能时它必须从线粒体漏出去到胞浆中;显然,细胞色素c行使抗氧毒性功能是在呼吸链外的线粒体膜间隙。
