As a significant index of marine environmental change in polar ocean, Radiolarian play an irreplaceable role in dipolar region. However, Radiolarian in the Southern Ocean, especially in the Prydz Bay, has not been studied as intensively as that in Arctic. In this project, based on the research data of sediment trap samples we have, and combined with the modern marine environmental parameters and marine records of climate change during the past hundreds of years, Radiolarian in the sediment traps, surface sediments and sediment cores, which collected from the Prydz Bay during 18th -31th CHINARE cruise, will be investigated. Three scientific objectives of this study are: (1) to investigate the radiolarian flux and species composition, and their seasonal-annual variations in relation to the modern marine environmental conditions in water covered by seasonal sea ice, (2) to define the composition and distribution of radiolarian in surface sediments, and their connections with modern physical environments, (3) distinguish the evolution of radiolarian assembly in this area in relation to marine environmental changes during the past hundreds of years in the Southern Ocean. The results of the study will account for the ecological-response principles of Radiolarian to modern marine environmental changes in the Southern Ocean. These achievements will be expected to promote the radiolarian research in the Prydz Bay and the Southern Ocean, and support the applicability of Radiolarian in the study of paleoceanography and even global climate change in the future.
