Metal phosphonate chemistry has been of great interest in recent years,owing to its potential applications in ion exchanges, selected catalysis and sensors etc. The target of this project is to design and synthesize novel metal phosphonate compounds with porous structures and to study their chemical and physical properties. Following this target, we have investigated systematically the influences of various experimental conditions on the structures of metal phosphonates, based on 1-hydroxyethylidenediphosphonate (hedp). Our efforts have been especially focused on the template effects on the self-assembly of porous structures of metal-hedp compounds. More than fourty new compounds have been prepared and characterized, which have one-, two- and.three-dimensional structures. Among these, about 18 compounds exhibit structures with channels. Further,serveral other phosphonate ligands especially those with functional groups have been synthesized, and their coordination capabilities explored. Finally, systematic studies on the magneto-structural relationship of these compounds have been conducted. The ion-exchange properties of a few compounds have been investigated.
