As one type of emerging organic pollutants, short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) has the typical linear paraffined and halogenated structure characteristics compared with the traditional persistent organic pollutants (POPs). As a candidate of POPs, they existed at higher levels in environments of China. However, to date, there have been few reports on the environmental behaviors of SCCPs, especially the occurrence, gas/particle partitioning and transport mechanism in the atmosphere. The scientific target of the study is to reveal the atmospheric occurrence and transport mechanism of SCCPs and detailed objects are to (1) investigate the occurrence of SCCPs in the gas and different size particle phase of typical urban and island in north China; (2) estimate the emission source strength and local fractionation effect of different SCCP homologues in urban and island atmosphere; (3) reveal the mechanism and factors controlling the gas/particle pertitioning of SCCPs, and the air-sea exchange; and (4) assess the contribution of atmospheric input to the marine environments for SCCPs in the research region. The results obtained in the present study are expected to be helpful to understand the environmental fate of new POPs, especial for their distribution and long range transport in the marine atmosphere, and to assess the environmental risks of SCCPs. It is also useful to enrich the environmental geochemical circulation theory of new POPs.
