STAR is one of the main detectors at Relativity Heavy Ion Collidor (RHIC) in Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL). The purpose of STAR detector is to research the state of matter with hard interaction in condition of high temperature and high density, to search for Quark-Glue Plasma (QGP), and to research the process of QGP creation and evolvement. The purpose of this paper is to do some pre-research for upgrading STAR detector with high time-resolution (<100ps) TOF. We propose to use the technique of Multi-gap Resistive Plate Chamber (MRPC). The capabilities of particles identification will be greatly improved after adding this TOF. More information for searching for QGP and studying the currently emerged physics will be provided also..One Tray, a part of the STAR-TOF that composed with 28 MRPCs, is tested in high radiation area at AGS in BNL and run normally during March-May 2002, around 10 weeks. The results are heart-stirring: time resolution <70ps, efficiency of detecting >95%, noise <20Hz/pad. This TOF is equipped on STAR and will be in running in January, 2003.Twenty new MRPCs are constructed in 2002 and the producing process and the technique requirements are updated. We try to define the standard of quality testing and to research the quality testing methods and technique. The Chinese proposal on "Construction of STAR-TOF and RHIC Physics" is nearly completed. The software environment for physics analysis of relativity heavy ion collision is set up in USTC. Some researches on physics analysis of STAR data and on simulation of TOF are being done under cooperation with the experts home and abroad.
STAR是BNL/RHIC上相对论重离子实验,研究超高温超密度下强相互作用物质性质,寻找夸克胶子等离子体(QGP)和双重子态。研究并建造高时间分辨的MRPC飞行时间谱仪,分辨时间<100ps,探测效率>90%,以提高STAR探测器对带电粒子的动量鉴别范围和测量精度,作为中国参加STAR国际合作的第一步,为中国分享STAR物理数据和科学成果创造必要得条件。.
