The role of lakes, particularly that of lake sediments, has been of great interest in the global and regional carbon cycle, although been ignored in the past due to its small size in the earth land surface. Lake sediments potentially store substantial quantities of organic carbon. This project aims to understand the carbon burial in lake sediments and the impact factors from the lake systems of Eastern China, which is characterized by the largest agricultural areas in China with an extremely high density of lakes and rivers. The lakes in this region have undergone dramatic changes over the past several decades under the interaction of human activity and climate warming. Two lakes (Nanyi Lake and Hulun Lake) were selected to understand the modern carbon burial process, focused on the carbon sources, and cabon mineral rate, esp. impacted by temperature, oxygen intrusion, bio-turbulation etc. Furthmore, 10-15 lakes were chosen to determine the historical changes in carbon burial, as influenced by the climatic changes and catchment human impacts, as well as the lacustrine environment. The integration of the modern and historical process would help to understand the underline mechanism, and the dominant impact factors, which could be used for the assessment of the total lake carbon burial in this region. Compared with the carbon storage in local soil and forest, it is reasonable to assess the role of lake sediments in the regional carbon cycle, for the purpose of rational policy-making of regional carbon emission.
湖泊由于面积较小,其碳汇功能在区域碳循环中的作用常常被忽视,近年来的研究表明湖泊生态系统中储存了大量的碳,也是一个不容忽视的碳汇。本项申请拟选择东部平原区的南漪湖,东北地区的呼伦湖作为典型湖泊,开展湖泊碳埋藏现代过程研究,分析湖泊碳埋藏效率及其影响因素;进而选择不同面积、不同类型的湖泊(10-15个),进行湖泊沉积物碳埋藏历史过程研究,探讨中国东部湖泊沉积物碳埋藏速率的变化特点、差异;综合分析湖泊碳埋藏的现代过程和历史变化,揭示中国东部湖泊碳埋藏变化过程与机理,在此基础上,确定影响该区域湖泊碳埋藏的主控因素,建立碳埋藏估算方法,估算整个区域的湖泊沉积物碳储量,并结合区域内土壤、森林碳数据对比研究,评估湖泊沉积物碳储量对区域碳循环的影响,为区域制定合理碳排放政策提供科学支撑依据。
