As the basic units in an urban built environment, buildings need to remain functional or be able to recover its basic function quickly so as to sustain the basic operation and assist the quick recovery of the community after major earthquakes. To increase the resilience of the urban built environment, the following two problems need to be solved at the level of individual buildings: How to evaluate the functional loss of a building and how to control such a loss. The solutions to both problems depend on appropriate understanding of the relationship between the structural and nonstructural systems in a building. The proposed research project involves analytical, numerical and experimental research to (1) reduce the seismic demands for nonstructural components in a building by more effective and comprehensive control of structural seismic responses and (2) identify the new challenges for structural passive control from the viewpoint of functional loss of buildings, which is primarily a result of nonstructural component damage. The project plans to conduct research on the seismic damage characteristics and fragility of nonstructural components, quantitative evaluation of building function and its loss, function-based multi-variable indices for the evaluation of damage control effects of passively controlled structures. Through the studies, it aims to connect the three components of structural response, element damage and building loss in an integrated manner and provide basis for enhancing the seismic resilience of buildings under earthquakes.
