Polymers man-made has been applied in the process of Al2O3 production as a flocculant of seperation of solid-liguid. Homever, it is difficult to biodecomposite for the polymers that are of toxicity.Therefore, it is of benefit to research natural, biodecomposable and nonpoisonous polymers as a flocculant. Chitosan is a nature polymer flocculant and mainly made of shrimp and crab shells. The chitosan resource is abundant and its price is getting cheaper. The utilization of Chitosan as a red mud flocculant of sintering process is researched. The flocculating ability of chitosan is compared with industrial flocculant A-2000 and PAS-1. Experiment result suggests that chitosan do have flocculating ability as red mud flocculant. The optimum addition quantity of chitosan is 0.025% of dry red mud, The average settling velocity of the first two minutes is 6.85cm.min-1. The placement of chitosan liquid for 30 hours don't influence the flocculating greatly. Modifying chitosan,researching appropriate water-soluable chitosan as red mud flocculant should be the main focus of the future research work. It will have great influence on the alumina industry.
