Mesozoic fossil insects were collected by us systematically from Upper Triassic rocks of Tongchuan, Shanxi, Middle and Upper rocks of Inner Mongolia and Liaoning, and Lower Cretaceous rocks of Beijing. Taxonomic studies focus on fossil Mecoptera,Neuroptera Odonata and Diptera.Based on abundant insects fossils collected from the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshang Formation of Ningcheng County, Inner Mongolia, 3 insect communities were recognized. The richness, diversity, dominance and palaeogeographical distribution of dominance species within these 3 communities were analyzed. Based on computing and comparing the Simpson's diversity index and information content of different insect communities, Insect community and their environmental setting are reconstructed. They represent a humid and warm climate condition. Results suggested that there might be a near-shore and shallow water lacustrine environment in fossil locality. Recent discoveries of pterosaur and other fossils from Daohugou Village near Ningcheng County, Inner Mongolia raise the question regarding the age and stratigraphic sequence of the fossil beds at the Daohugou area. Extensive fieldwork with measurement of geological section reveals undeniable evidence showing that the Daohugou fossil beds are of the Middle Jurassic Jiulongshan Formation, rather than the so-called Yixian Formation. The Daohugou beds yielded no fossils of the Johel Biota. Up to now, 24 papers have been completed, of which 19 papers, one monograph, one photo book and 1 popular science paper were published. In 2002, a Silver Medal from Beijing Municipal Government for "Flower-associated Brachycera flies as fossil evidences for Jurassic angiosperm origins" was awarded to us. A new family and one new subfamily including 11new genera and 15 new species within Neuroptera have been reported. Families Polystoechotidae and Grammolingiidae were the first and oldest record all over the world. All these discoveries are essential material for the studies of insect origin and early evolution.
