The drinking of potions of decoctions of the leaf of the guava plant, Psidium guajava L. (Myrtaceae), as well as chewing of the fresh leaf, had been employed in the treatment of acute diarrhoeal diseases in folk medicine, especially in tropical areas of the globe, such as Brazil, Thailand, Guangdong in China. The leaves of Psidium guajava L. had positive effect on diarrhoea due to human rotavirus. (HRV), it could shorten the duration and promote the convert of HRV antigen in faeces. Pharmacological test in vitro shows the leaf can strengthen anti-HRV-infectious ability of MA-104 cell, decrease toxicity of HRV and restore MA-104 cells infected by HRV..Essential oil ,flavonoids and triterpenes were extracted from the leaf. 93 peak values and 60 components of essential oil were identified by GC-MS. Essential oil had anti-inflammatory and analgesia effect, so it could remit abdominalgia caused by enteronitis. Quercetin, extracted from flavonoids, could inhibit spontaneous contraction of isolated ileum of guinea pig and antagonize contractive reaction of isolated ileum caused by Ach, so it could slow the peristalsis of excited intestinal canal and restore the normal peristalsis. 2α-hydroxy ursolic acid was obtained from triterpenes and identified by IR and 1HNMR.The clinical pharmacological effect and biological activity of the leaf were studied in this article. The results were as follows: 1.The leaf of Psidium guajava L. could antagonize the infection of HRV, it had a good curative effect on enteronitis caused by HRV. 2. Essential oil had anti-inflammatory and analgesic effect. 3. Quercetin could antagonize contractive reaction of isolated ileum of guinea pig caused by Ach and restore normal activity of intestinal canal. 4. 2α-hydroxy ursolic acid separated from triterpenes was identified, it's biological effect need further studies. So the curative effect of the leaf of Psidium guajava L could be a combined effect of essential oil, quercetin, 2α-hydroxy ursolic and other components of biological activity..
