The project "Early angiosperms of Northeast China"(No.39970050) financed by the Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), has obtained important scientific achievements. Focusing on the study of the early angiosperms from western Liaoning of the NE China, combined with the study of the early angiosperms from Jixi of Heilongjiang, Dalazi of eastern Jilin and the Song-Liao Basin, the project has first synthetically reported the compositions of the early angiosperms from the NE China and recognized them for four main developmental stages. In the early angiosperms from the western Liaoning, the authors have first found the earliest known angiosperms Archaefructus with complete both reproductive and vegetative organs, and first reported Archaefructus as aquatic and herbaceous plants. Combined with the molecular study, the authors first proposed Archaefructus as the "sister group" to all the angiosperms and established a new basal angiosperm family Archaefructaceae. These achivements would put much forward to the stusy of the orgin and early evolution of angiosperms in the world. The project has published a monograph (2001) and six papers including one published in the journal "Science" which was chosen as one of "The Ten Top Advances of Science and Technology in China's Universities for 2002" and one of "The Top Science News for 2002" of the American Journal "Discovery"
深入研究我国东北地区晚侏罗世晚期、早白垩世早中期及早白垩世晚期等三个阶段的早期被子植物化石,研究它们之间可能存在的系统演化关系及古植物地理联系;追索晚侏罗世早中期或更早些时期可能存在的早期被子植物,探讨被子植物起源的祖先类群及起源中心,为研究中国东北乃至全球被子植物起源及早期演化作出贡献。
