On the basis of examining the Late Quaternary variations of dunes and lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert, Inner Mongolia, the key objectives of this project were to study the processes and their mechanisms of desert evolution and the impact of global change in northwestern China. The outcomes show that there have been four periods of wetter (than at present ) climates with cyclical characteristics during the last 30,000 years in the areas of the Badain Jaran Desert owing to the influences of the westlies and the East Asian monsoon systems. Under the impact of strengthened summer monsoons, it was relatively humid in the early and middle Holocene in the study area. The late Holocene was characterized by a trend of aridification in the Badain Jaran Desert. In order to find similarities and differences between various deserts in China, we have extended our investigation fields to the Taklamakan Desert in southern Xinjiang. Our preliminary results indicate that the dunes in the lower reaches of the Keriya River are generally quite young. At the time 28ka, the precipitation was considerably abundant on the southern margin of the Tarim Basin.
着重研究巴丹吉林沙漠东南部大沙丘和沙区永久性湖泊及已干枯湖泊末次冰期以来的动态演变过程。通过野外考察、室内沉积物样品的沉积学和地球化学及年代学分析,寻找环境演变的佐证,重建该地区近十万年以来环境变化的过程。该研究能够为揭示全球环境变化的机制提供重要素材。
