Sea bass is one of the main commercial fish in aquaculture. There are some quentions on systematic position of Chinese sea bass. The systematic evolution of germplasm resources, taxonomic and the genetic variation of sea bass were studied. The study were carried out by using morphological characteristics, isozyme analysis, RAPD, sequence comparison analysis. The results indicated that: there were obvious morphological differences between Chinese and Japanese sea bass. Significant differences existed in gill rakes, number of vertebrate and scales. A nearly complete replacement of alleles at LDH*, GPI-1*, GPI-2* locus between Japanese and Chinese sea bass. The Nei's genetic distance between Chinese and Japanese sea bass was much larger than that among Chinese sea bass populations. There were about 7% sequence differences at mtDNA cytb gene between them but no difference among Chinese sea bass individuals. Sequence comparison analysis of D-loop and S7 ribosome protein gene indicated that significant differences were also existed between Chinese and Japanese sea bass but little differences among Chinese sea bass populations or Japanese sea bass populations.
