Insufficient rainfall and shortage in irrigation water resources on the Loess Plateau and other arid and semiarid regions of Northwestern China cause very lower and unsteady crop yields, and sometimes even total failure of crops due to prolonged period of draughts. Intensified heavy rains, on the other hand induce severe rainfall runoff and water erosion and the utyilization rate of rainfall available to crops decreased. Runoff/runon in farming practises, combined with application of PAM can increase infiltration rate of precipitation into soil profile, which provide sufficient water to meet the requirement of crop consumption by adding extra water into runon fields from runoff sections. The suggested runoff farming system has capability of reducing water loss and soil erosion, increaqse water use efficiency and capability of draught tolerance, to ensure high and reliable crop yield.
