High density electropulsing was applied to a low-carbon steel in the solid state, the ultrafine grained microstructure and nano-structure was found to be formed, the tensile strength of the samples was dramatically enhanced without a decrease in ductility. The influence of electropulsing on nucleation during phase transformation was studied. The mechanism for grain refinement of metallic materials under high density electropulsing was discussed.
