In recent years, large-scale disasters (earthquake, hurricane, flood, weapons of mass destruction, etc.) posed critical threats to optical network survivability which attracted wide attention from both industry and academia. The existing researches on surviving disaster failures were usually based on empirical models, which were hard to accurately describe the complex and changeful disaster destruction processes and were apt to cause problems such as unclear surviving targets, weak surviving reliability, and low resource utilization. Accordingly, this project, on the background of earthquake disaster, studies the disaster early warning based network destruction model and the surviving plan decision model by employing the earthquake early warning mechanism. On this basis, aiming at the severe network resource damage caused by the disaster and the large amount of traffic sharply increased in post disaster, this project proposes and researches various network status adapted urgent protection and restoration mechanisms, and corresponding resource optimization mechanisms. By exploiting periodic disaster early warning, as well as grading and quantifying resource usability, we overcome the obstacles in terms of network performance evaluation and resource utilization encountered in the existing researches. By defining performance measures such as resource usability grade, semi-damaged component’s life time, and effective reliable bandwidth, we solve the key problems involved in the research work. Conducting this project can significantly contribute to realizing our strategic plan of future optical network development on both theoretical and technical aspects.
