Granular sludge which is of high activity and rapid settling ability was cultivated in an SBR reactor under aerobic conditions. Simultaneous nitrification and denitrification were obtained with the sludge. Continus experiment with synthetic substrates similar to municipal wastewater showed that the process was stable and effective. COD, NH3-N and total nitrogen removal efficiencies could reach 95%, 97% and 60-70%, respectively,even though organic and nitrogen loading rates were operated as high as 2.4 kgCOD/m3.d and 0.24 kgNH3-N/m3.d. The effluent water quality could meet the requirement of State Comprehensive Discharging Standard (GB8978-1996). Batch tests showed that carbonaceous activity and nitrification rate were as high as 0.16 kg COD/kg SS.h and 4.6 g NH3-N/kg SS.h. SVI of the sludge was less than 100 ml/g. The results certified the proposed theory, that is, simultaneous nitrification-denitrification of municipal wastewater can be carried out in a single activated sludge process.
