The original intention of many malocclusion patients for orthodontic treatment was to improve their facial appearance. However, there is no such computer-aided orthodontic treatment method and system which was developed for improving patients’ facial appearance. Clinical orthodontic treatment is mainly conducted to correct patients’ dentition, and how the facial appearance will change to be after the treatment is uncontrollable. As a result, patients are often not satisfied with the treatment results regarding the facial appearance change. For the purpose of implementing the orthodontic treatment with controllable tooth movement and facial appearance change, this project proposes to develop a prediction method for facial appearance change induced by tooth movement to provide reference for orthodontic treatment planning. The three-dimensional models of teeth and maxillofacial soft/hard tissue will be reconstructed based on multi-source image fusion. The deformation of facial soft tissue induced by tooth movement will be simulated based on biomechanical simulation analysis, then the facial appearance after treatment will be predicted. To verify and modify the prediction method, the prediction and reference models of facial appearance after treatment will be reconstructed from images of patients captured before and after orthodontic treatment. The implementation of this project will provide a computer-aided method and tool for the orthodontic treatment with predictable and controllable facial appearance change, and would have important promotion action for improving the orthodontic treatment results and enhancing doctor-patient communication. It has great social significance and potential application value considering the tens of millions of patients.
