Based on the backgrounds that the active sites in nitrogenase and photosystem II contain bimetallic cluster components and that only little researches have been performed for the V-nitrogenase and the V/S chemistry in comparison with the researches for the Mo-nitrogenase and Mo/S chemistry, our studies focus on the structural chemistry in these biological processes. Some of the related bimetallic clusters have been synthesized for simulating the environment around the active centers. Characterizations for these modeling compounds are favorable to understand the relationship between the structure and the properties for the biological systems. We have developed in further the vanadium sulfur chemistry on the basis of our previous researches and increase the exhibitive intensity of our works in the chemical world. The studies of the manganese modeling compounds have simulated and exhibited the coordination sphere of the Mn sites in the oxygen-evolving center (OEC) to a certain extent. Several types of the modeling complexes which are rarely reported have been obtained and structurally characterized. Meanwhile we have suggested how the chloride ion exists in the OEC of the PSII. We have published 30 articles and an application has been recommended for a national natural scientific prize of 2003 by CAS.
