"Active center transformation polymerization from a propagating radical to a cationic mechanism" of vinyl monomers was got succeeded first time when I was in the laboratory of Professor Kamachi, Osaka university, Japan several years ago. Novel copolymers with different types of monomer combination can be obtained by this unique method. In this project, a systematic research of this transformation polymerization was conducted. First, factors to effect the transformation polymerization have been investigated. It was found that there had been a great effect of the basicity of the medium to the electron transfer reaction from propagating radicals to electron acceptors. The more the basicity was, the more difficult the electron transfer was. Block copolymers of N-vinylcarbozole and cyclohexene oxide were prepared successfully by the transformation polymerization by adjusting the basicity of the medium. Second, homopolymers produced by the chain transfer reaction during the cationic polymerization were eliminated by adding a bifunctional monomer such as, 1,2,5,6-Diepoxycyclooctane, to the system. Thus, a block copolymer with a linear segment and a branched segment was obtained at the same time. In addition, a novel "star/micelle" copolymer was obtained first time by this method.
