The idea of building a project-oriented information system based upon a specialized information database was realized in our work. A process engineering projected-oriented information system was built on Linux operating system, which attempted to provide tools for helping researchers in the filed of chemical metallurgy use Internet effectively and communicate with each other. During development of this information system, the information about chemical metallurgy and process engineering on the Internet was collected and analyzed, and a database was used to manage the information collected from the Internet. In order to facilitate users all over the world get the information in this system, the web-based technology was used. The programs for automatically fetching and analyzing the web information and database management were developed using Java and PHP in our work, so it could be easily transplanted to other operating system. We used the process engineering project-oriented information system that we built as an information service in compilation of books and reports and for our research projects, such as clean iron production, green process design and nonmaterial etc. These applications showed that building a project-oriented information based on a specialized information system was a good way to explore and track the frontiers and research direction for the specific project in the conditions of rapid global network growth. It may be of help in the construction project-oriented information systems in other fields.
